Dental Insurance 101
Dental Insurance is insurance designed to pay a portion of the costs associated with dental care. Dental insurance can be thought of as a method of providing financial assistance to seek regular dental care. Participation in a dental plan often encourages regular visits to a dentist, which is essential to maintaining oral health.
Most individuals who have Dental Insurance are covered through a group plan made available by their employer. The Dental Insurance can be paid by the employer as a benefit to eligible employees, but often is available as a voluntary insurance benefit. This means that employees who are interested in a plan can purchase dental insurance at their own expense. Premiums may be set up as a payroll deduction, and if part of a Section 125 plan, may also be deducted on a pre-tax basis.
Most dental plans are designed to cover basic diagnostic and preventive dental needs. Coverage for basic services, like fillings and simple tooth extractions, are often included. More comprehensive dental plans will typically provide some financial assistance for major services including root canals, crowns, and prosthetic services. A dental plan may require you to see a dentist that participates in that insurance plan.
