What new employee benefits are available without health questions?
I am a new employee just becoming eligible for insurance benefits. Are there any supplemental coverages I can obtain without answering health questions?
Yes, most supplemental policies contain certain rights for newly eligible employees, including the opportunity to elect coverage with no health questions asked. This coverage is referred to as the guarantee issue amount. While each group contract may be individualized by the City or County, most of the voluntary policies in The Municipal Pool contain similar provisions. For example:
- Voluntary Life Insurance will contain a guarantee issue amount for the employee (often $30,000) as well as the employee's spouse and dependent children (usually $10,000 for each).
- If available from the employer, Voluntary Short Term Disability Insurance can be elected on a guarantee issue basis, usually up to 66 2/3% of monthly earnings.
- If the group offers Voluntary Long Term Disability Insurance, the newly eligible employee can usually elect up to 60% of monthly earnings with no health questions asked.
- A new employee can enroll in Long Term Care Insurance, if offered, on a guarantee issue basis. An employee must elect the guarantee issue amounts within 30 days of their initial eligibility to take advantage of the guarantee issue offers.
